THE HERMIT CRAB
I guess they are not that interesting to people who live on the North
Coast, but for me, Hermit Crabs were a source of great entertainment.
I was following them along on hands and knees on Broome's numerous
beaches. I felt a bit self conscious wondering whether I would end up
being the object of some tourists holiday snaps. I think my paranoia
may stem from the time I was on a swing playing with my two children.
A family walked past and a little girl asked: "Why is that man on the
swing?". "Don't worry love he's disabled" came the reply from the
parent. It took me a while to find this amusing but in the end I had to because my precious family remind me of this
occasion regularly.
Sorry, I digress. Back to the Hermit Crab. As I approached, each crab they would quickly drop down and withdraw
into the safety of their shells. You only had to wait about thirty seconds and the shell would slowly rise revealing
beady eyes surveying the area to see if the four legged disabled man had gone or not.
This Crazy Crab withdrew into his shell and sat there hiding. Only problem was his shell was not large enough to
accommodate such a large frame. Suddenly this appendage popped up as if spring loaded. I'm not real sure what
he was doing but I laughed out loud when I downloaded my photo's in the hotel room that night. I was very grateful
for this brief encounter with this most interesting creature.
I think we all try to hide certain things from other people with the so called "masks" we wear. Most of the time
unsuccessfully. If we think we can hide ourselves from God we delude ourselves just like our friend in the picture.
God isn't as scary as we imagine, he is patiently waiting for us to accept his free invitation. Isn't it time we came out
of our shells and moved into accommodation that God has already designed for us.
God Bless
